O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in early 2005, while she was still a high-school student. She made it to the top 100 round since the judges were impressed at her singing performance. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by judge. However, O'Neil suffered a significant drop in her Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the top 3, and second lowest. Judges were shocked by this and advised the viewers to select contestants such as Melissa O'Neil, who had most impressive singing talent. O'Neil's performance was consistently good, that he did not fall into the third place. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the time of the show. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
